A mole's eyes are tiny and hidden in its velvet fur. Moles aren't fully blind, they just barely use their eyes: underground there's nothing to see. They find their way by touch, by smell, by the tiniest vibration in the dirt. No candles. No panic. Just feel.
Each front paw has a second thumb: an extra, sickle-shaped bone next to the real one, which makes its digging hands even wider. Its closest relatives, the shrews, don't have it. Two thumbs per hand. Hard to shake out.
Its velvet fur doesn't lie flat in one direction, so it can back up through a tight tunnel as easily as it moves forward. And its blood carries a special hemoglobin that lets it breathe the stale air of a burrow where other animals would struggle. It never gets stuck in a position.
Moles keep larders: special tunnels where they store immobilised earthworms for later, sometimes hundreds of them. Then it found Monad, a chain too fast to watch anyway, and dug in. $BLIND: stack quietly, hold blind.
